Dear Reader

Today is the Winter Solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere - and the Summer Solstice for those of you south of the Equator. For all of us this day marks a turning of the year as the days begin to lengthen/shorten. So this is a good time to give thanks that we live on such a hospitable planet - and to remember we need to care for it well if it is to stay that way!

I wish you happiness at this turning of the year. I hope you get to spend time with those who are dear to you and so feel restored and ready to face the challenges and opportunities of 2012

In this issue of the newsletter:

  • Inspirational Leadership - the highs and lows of leadership
  • New book on Coaching & Mentoring Supervision - download a free chapter
  • Felt Shift - how to make change stick
  • Leading and Coaching Across Cultures seminar
  • The Mentor's Guide - new edition
Kind regards

Inspirational Leadership

leadership 2Richard Olivier's analysis of Henry V's development as a leader has useful things to teach the modern leader. Olivier maps the journey Henry took through the Dark Night of the Soul, reaching deep down inside himself to find the inspirational vision that turned outrageous odds into inspiring challenge!

New Book on Coaching & Mentoring Supervision

Coaching & Mentoring Supervision coverCoaching & Mentoring Supervision is an edited collection of 24 chapters exploring various models, the use of different theoretical perspectives, the various ways supervision can be used, theory, and specific applications. You can download the Introduction to the book for free. I contributed a chapter on my Three Worlds Four Territories model of supervision which can be read in a slightly modified form on my website. If you're interested in supervision, buy this book!

Making Change Stick - The Felt Shift

Coaching is all about change. If a coach can generate a Felt Shift then their coachee is much more likely to make changes that stick. But, whilst Felt Shift is an important phenomenon in coaching, it is one which little has been written about. To encourage myself to understand it better, I volunteered to do a session on Felt Shift at the 1st International Conference in Coaching Supervision held at Oxford Brooked University earlier this year. This article describes the framework I developed.

Leading & Coaching Across Cultures Seminar - London April 25-27 2012

coverCACPhilippe Rosinski, and old friend and colleague from our Center for Creative Leadership days - and an expert in leadership in multicultural environments - will be running a 3-day certification on the Cultural Orientations Framework, and presenting methodologies such as the Global Coaching Process and Global Scorecard. For more information about these see either of his two books Coaching Across Cultures or Global Coaching.

The Mentor's Guide - new edition

Lois Zachary starts her preface to this new edition of The Mentor's Guide thus: "An old African proverb says, 'If you want to travel fast, travel alone; if you want to travel far, travel together.' At its core, that is what mentoring is: traveling far, together, in a relationship of mutual learning."

This excellent primer is a practical guide that lays out the mentoring processes from beginning to end, provides tools for creating an effective learning relationship, and will help you understand how to manage intentional mentoring relationships in a cycle that fully engages both mentoring partners—mentor and menthe.
